A New Beginning

-

Today the remarkable development of art through technology is not a thing that all of a sudden happened but a result of numerous artists using technology as an artistic medium for a long time. The invention of tube paints and cameras was the driving force for the artist to build new artistic thoughts, to develop expression techniques, and to refuse the way of perfectly reproducing objects and lead the modern art with diversity and artist's personality.

The moves where artists use technology actively in art have been reinforced since Nam June Paik, the founder of Media Art in Korea modern art history. He influenced artists so they could explore the infinite possibilities of artworks with new technology.

Nam June Paik, like many artists of the 1960s, published his manifestos, the title is “cybernated art for the cybernated life". It begins with the following two paragraphs.

"Cybernated art is important. but, art for cybernated life is more important, and the latter need not be cybernated. However, if Pasteur and Robespierre are right that we can resist poison only through certain built-in poison, then some specific frustrations, caused by cybernated life, require accordingly cybernated shock and catharsis.”

He says that art for cybernated life doesn’t have to be the cybernated art. Nevertheless, he explains that cybernated shocks and catharsis are required to cope with technologically evolved life more actively.

Then, what is the role and meaning of contemporary art in the 4th Industrial Revolution? How can artists accept the current situation in which artificial intelligence (AI) technology has flowed into art and AI artists have drawn attention from the art world?

AI Art Gallery, AIA which supports experimental collaboration among artists and various artistic attempts to create the value and meaning of AI technology in art, explores the role and meaning of AI artists in art through this preview #1. We would like to see if AI artists can be an artistic tool or partner to expand their creativity. The hyperrealism artist Domin, well-known as a “dice” artist in Korea, completed Dokdo's four seasons with an AI artist, Imagine AI. He painted its spring and winter and the AI artist did its summer and autumn and this work shows us the coexistence between humans and AI artists.

Before this exhibition, Domin and Imagine AI received a lot of attention through the collaborative work called “Commune with …” which means 'to communicate'. Under Domin's planning and direction, he worked on the upper side in a western painting technique, and Imagine AI worked on the lower side in an eastern one, which shows the reflection of the Dokdo island on the water surface.

Jin Yoo, a digital graphic designer using Paintly AI, combines digital languages and virtual worlds with artistic networks. In this exhibition, she used famous places from all over the world as a motif and then reinterpreted and expressed them in her unique style with Paintly AI.

Any artist with a right understanding of AI technology and a critical perspective on it can lead AI's works to excellent art. Just as Nam June Paik did cybernated art for cybernated life, today artists will be able to provide catharsis to the frustration caused by artificially intellectualized life, responding to it with intellectualized art. This can create new aesthetics or serve as art in a traditional sense. We expect that this exhibition “preview #1” will draw more attention, interest, and discussion about AI art.

Motivation

New technologies mostly lead to new user experiences and new cultural phenomena. For example, the invention of cameras led to new artistic trends called impressionism. Then, What kind of cultural phenomenon will new technologies of AI lead to?

'Homo artex' means human species as a being of art, and Michel Lourblancche says in his book [Origin of Art], "Human was an artist from the moment of existence."

AI can be a good collaborator for those who have the artistic sensibility to visualize and communicate their thoughts and sensations, but who lack the skills to express without majoring in art.

About the artwork

There is the problem of using a smartphone on the road, which is the biggest problem of modern people. and he wanted to express with Korean elements, and it is an artwork that humorously expresses the Korean traditional story of “The tiger will kidnap you.” In this classic fairy tale, he wanted to deliver the message that it's a dangerous thing to do just like you could get kidnapped by the tiger.
